Liner Seaming Methods

Thermal Fusion / Melt Bonding

Extrusion Welding

Thermal Fusion / Melt Bonding

Thermal fusion, aka Melt Bonding, is a crucial technique in the installation of HDPE liners. It involves the process of joining two HDPE sheets through controlled heating to create a strong, seamless, and impermeable connection. This method ensures that the liner functions as a unified barrier, effectively containing liquids, gases, or other materials within the containment system.

Extrusion Welding

Extrusion welding involves melting the edges of two HDPE sheets using a specialized extrusion welding machine. This machine combines heat and pressure to liquefy the HDPE material at the joint area. Simultaneously, a filler material, typically made from the same HDPE material as the liner, is introduced to further strengthen the connection. As the melted material cools and solidifies, it fuses the two sheets together, forming a robust bond.

Quality Control (Seam Testing)

Air Pressure Test

This method is tests 100% of the seam length for leaks.  The (dual) weld track gap is pressurized by air injected through a needle inserted into the gap between weld tracks. The potential occurrence of leaks becomes evident through a reduction in pressure over a five-minute interval following the pressurization of the gap via manual pumping, subsequently sealed by a valve.

This approach allows for swift leak testing across lengthy seam sections, contributing to a highly efficient installation procedure. It’s important to note that following a successful pressure test, the pressure is released at the seam’s opposite end from the pump/gauge assembly, ensuring the seam’s continuity and confirming its 100% testing.
